Department Overview

Head of Department: Prof. Neelu Jain Gupta (01.06.2020-31.05.2023)

The department of Zoology was established in 1977 to impart advance education at M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. level. Besides giving through grounding in basic Zoology, it lays emphasis on deep understanding of applied viz. Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Ecology and Animal behaviour. With a team of well-qualified teachers, the department offers three specialization's to the students they are Parasitology, Fish Biology and Endocrinology. In the duration of four semesters a P.G student is offered different courses. The department of Zoology has well equipped laboratories- Toxicology Lab, Molecular Taxonomy Lab and Parasitology Lab and Chronobiology Lab, research activities are supported by funding agencies like UGC, AICTE, DST, CSIR, and CST. Though the central library caters the need of students, the department has its own library. Research activities are supported by national funding agencies. It has four independent research laboratories. So far more than 100 students have been awarded Ph.D degree. The department has published about 200 research papers. A number of students have occupied important positions in India and abroad.

University Grants Commission selected this Department for Special Assistance under its innovative assistance programme in toxicology to impart quality education and research in toxicology. This department offers excellent research opportunities in environmental toxicology, free radical biology, and occupational toxicology.
The laboratories are very well equipped with modern and sophisticated teaching and research instruments. It has sophisticated analytical instruments viz. HPLC system, atomic absorption, spectrophotometer, GEL documentation system, deep freezers, UV-spectrophotometers, electronic balances, high quality research microscopes, electrophoretic equipments, refrigerated centrifuge and ultra centrifuge.

Fields of Specialization

Parasitology, Fish Biology, Toxicology, Free Radical Biology, Biomonitoring, Immunoparasitology, Molecular Taxonomy, Animal Behaviours, Photoperiodism, Plantnematology.

Programme/ Courses

The department is currently offering the follwing programmes of study :

About Programme

M.Sc. (Zoology) has sixteen courses with specialization in Parasitology, Fish Biology and Endocrinology. M.Phil. Programme at M.Phil. level, efforts are made to fully train students for higher education and research. Besides four regular courses, a student independently works on a research project. Thus theoretical as well as practical training is offered simultaneously.

About Programme

The department of Zoology imparts quality education in Toxicology to students since the year of 2004. Toxicology is the science of poisons involving the unwanted effects of chemicals on living organisms and the environment. Toxicology research improves the health of humans, animals and environment. Its studies are required to ensure the safety of medicines, household and chemicals, industrial and natural compounds to which humans and animals are frequently exposed. Toxicology research identifies harmful effects of potential new products, prevents very unsafe products from reaching the market place and determines safe levels for approved project.
The entire course consists of sixteen papers divided into four semesters. Each course consists of lectures, practical exercises, seminars and tests. Students will be encouraged to undergo training at apex institutes of toxicology, reputed pharma industries and non-clinical research centres.
The courses include basic and applied aspects in toxicology. The course offers excellent job opportunities in private and government institutions.
